| A Letter from a Delta Flight Attendant | |
|
As a flight attendant in the combined airline, what will you need besides the Richard Tyler designed uniforms that you're being fitted for? Operating under Delta management requires a few extra items that you aren't aware of --and that Joanne Smith has undoubtedly not told you about. After 30 years as a Delta flight attendant, a short stint as a supervisor, married to a 32-year retired pilot, there are things that are necessities as an employee of Delta. 1. Large file cabinet. You will definitely need this. I have a large 4 drawer one that is filled with only Delta files for myself and my husband. Many of those files are mine due to an OJI. I had lifetime medical from the injury and, later, when I needed physical therapy, it took 2 years to get my records straightened out--unbeknown to me, Delta had put injuries on my record that I never had. I found that it's harder to prove you don't have an injury, than if you do have an injury. I went through all the channels at Delta, all the way to the top. No luck. I had a solid case against Delta, but because Delta was nearing filing for bankruptcy the chances of recouping my losses through were slim. Most likely, it would have been pennies on the dollar. Those top executives who made the call not to pay me at all--even though it was clearly Delta's fault--are still there. The Executive was Beth Johnston--look her up near the top of the executive chart. You will need to keep every piece of paper on each and every injury or broken fingernail. Additionally, you will need to keep a written record of all communication with Delta on each and every occasion. You will need to keep every record of all doctor's visits. You will need to keep all records of communication with the insurance company. It adds up. Get a big file cabinet. 2. Get a box of computer paper. You'll need it to make copies of everything. Don't think that something is insignificant. Sometimes you will be very surprised at what you will need later. Make copies of all communication--I can't emphasize that enough. Insist that all communication be done in writing. This is extremely easy with email. It has been and still is, Delta management's practice to avoid putting things in writing. They like to say "we should discuss this in person." That's by design--it's not in writing so there is no record of what they say or do. 3. Get e extra toner for your printer/copier. You will need this, too. 4. Prepare yourself mentally. What you read or see in print, may not actually be what Delta management says or does. Here's a good example: From our Handbook, updated 7/15/08: "2.Z.12 Meeting Pay- You will be paid at the rate of $12 per hour for attending any personnel/business meeting. Pay will automatically be on your monthly time display (MOTS) statement." Sounds good, huh? Not true. Delta wrote it, but that's NOT what Delta does. They will not pay flight attendants for required meetings with their supervisors or other management. They say that not what it means. However, if you are required to meet with someone at Delta, it is a business meeting. Period. Our management is paid for the meeting, but they don't want to pay you--even though they wrote it in the handbook and require you to attend! 5. You will need to allot plenty of extra time from your schedule to deal with these extra duties . Remember, at Delta, we are non-union so you are on your own. You have to do everything yourself. You have to keep up with everything yourself. You will have to fight to right each error yourself. This is the Delta way. Delta Flight Attendant (name deleted for security reasons) |

Airline Crew (FMLA) Act(HR2744)
We Did It! - HR2744 Passes the
House On Tuesday, May 20 the House
of Representatives passed the Airline Crew (FMLA)
Technical Corrections Act (HR2744). The final count was
402 to 9, an impressive and substantial majority.
The successful passage of this bill is due to the grass
roots effort by all of us that sent in letters and
called our elected officials asking them to support this
very important legislation. We would like to
especially express our gratitude to Shane Larson,
AFA-CWA Director of Government Affairs for his guidance
as well as the other Government Affairs activists at our
airline and from the other 21 AFA-CWA represented
carriers that worked tirelessly to make this happen. A
special thank you to Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) one
of the original cosponsors of the bill that helped us
gain other GOP cosponsors. We now must focus on the
companion bill in the Senate (S2059). We currently have
24 cosponsors and would like to continue the bi-partisan
trend that we currently enjoy in the Senate bill. The
hurdle that we face now is educating the Senate on the
uniqueness of our schedules, just like we did in the
House. For example, the Bush Administration’s Department
of Labor (DOL) does not consider our reserve flight
attendants full time employees saying that their on-call
periods should not be credited toward the hours needed
to qualify for FMLA. Clearly they do not understand - We
will make them understand. If you have not already done
so please call your Senators and let them know how
important this law is to all crewmembers. For a phone
script and to find your Senators’ contact information
please click on the links to the right of this page. To
view a video of opening remarks by Rep. Tim Bishop
(D-NY) on the House floor click on the link to the
right. Once the Senate bill passes,
both bills will be combined and sent to the President
for his signature. This new law will not only benefit
AFA-CWA flight attendants, but all flight attendants and
pilots in the U.S. Crewmembers will finally be
able to meet the defined minimum number of hours for
FMLA coverage, (60 percent of a full-time schedule)
based on their airline’s monthly flying requirements.
No longer will crewmembers need to negotiate for fair
FMLA benefits. We are very proud of this fact once again
proving that your Union can be effective in taking
issues off the negotiations table through successful
legislation. Albert and Diana |
